I’ll make it to the presidency, says Zanzibar’s CUF chief Hamad

CIVIC United Front (CUF) Secretary General, Mr Seif Sharif Hamad, says he is highly optimistic that this year he will make it to State House as Zanzibar’s 8th president since the 1964 revolution which overthrew the sultanate.

“I am confident because all the indications show that the electorate have trust in me. I am ready to serve the people and ensure Zanzibar enjoys its sovereignty,” Mr Hamad said after he received 1.5m/- from his supporters from Urban district.

A group of CUF fans from the district on Unguja island said they had decided to donate the money to Mr Hamad in support of his ambition to contest in the upcoming general elections.

“The money is for the nomination fee, and we wish he wins the elections,” Ms Salma Magram said, adding that she and her CUF colleagues would continue supporting him in the democratic struggle to become president. Hamad (72), a renowned politician, claims that in all past elections – 1995, 2000, 2005 and 2010 – he emerged the winner, but the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) failed to declare him the victor.

“We are better prepared this year for elections compared to past years. We are confident I shall win and ZEC will not make any mistake to subvert the will of the people.

We need honesty and transparency,” said Mr Hamad, currently serving as Zanzibar’s First Vice-President in the Government of National Unity (GNU).

CUF’s timetable indicates that currently the party is screening applicants to contest for the Zanzibar House of Representatives, Union Parliament (MP) and special seats before releasing 2015 application forms for union and Zanzibar top positions.
